Larkin Poe – Gorilla
10.03.19
Nashville based sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, better known as Larkin Poe, are embarking on a UK and European tour starting this weekend in Manchester at Gorilla.
The tour is in support of their fourth studio album Venom and Faith which has garnered huge critical and and commercial success.
The pair are probably best known for their YouTube channel Tip O’ The Hat, where they have covered everything from Howlin’ Wolf and The Beatles to Janis Joplin. Using minimal instrumentation – predominantly their voices, a guitar and a steel lap guitar, the siblings have done some tremendous work on some much-loved songs.
However tonight, the band have not come alone, complete with full Tarka Layman on bass on Kevin McGowan on drums, they open up proceedings with blistering version of the Leadbelly standard Black Betty. The band rattles through a set that includes new songs Blue Ridge Mountains and the soulful California King.
This is roots music at its finest, performed with real heart and gusto; close your eyes and you are transported to the heartland of Southern America – open fields and the Georgia sun beaming down at your face…. As opposed to the horrid Manchester winter’s evening. Singer Rebecca Lovell thanks the capacity crowd for coming out and making the gig a sell-out: but with the band providing a dose of Americana and sunshine, why would you want to stay in?
Older songs from albums Reskinned and Peach also get an airing with standout tracks Freedom, Look Away and main set closer Wanted Women / AC/DC being the highlights of an outstanding show.
Tonight’s gig was the perfect example of a foot stomping, rip roaring Country-infused rock and blues show. Quality musicianship blended with well-crafted songs, sang with plenty of heart and soul. Larkin Poe are certainly a band worth catching on their current tour and perfect for the festival circuit when they return the Black Deer Festival in the summer.
